We’ve had reports of teens in the neighborhood going into unlocked cars and open garages.
If you see any activity like this please call 911 to report.
‘To protect yourself please make sure your vehicles are locked and there are no valuables (wallet, keys, purse, etc.) visible. Take them inside when possible. Do not leave items of value in your truck bed if you cannot secure them. And keep your garage doors closed if you are not actively in there.
Again, if you see anything suspicious please report it.
The Board has received a number of complaints about residents who received ATV’s for Christmas and are driving them in the community causing hazardous conditions to pedestrians and vehicles in the streets & sidewalks. This includes ATV’s being driven out of driveways at highspeed without regard for residents and cars in the area.
The following rules are some of the laws set down by Florida on the use of ATV’s and UTV’s:
In Florida, an ATV may be operated on an unpaved public roadway, with a posted speed limit less than 35 m.p.h., during the day. You are not permitted to operate an ATV or UTV on any other public road, street or highway.
Any person under 16 years of age must be supervised by an adult during operation of an ATV or UTV.
Any person under 16 years of age who is operating an ATV or UTV in Florida must have in his or her possession a certificate evidencing the satisfactory completion of an approved OHV safety course, unless that person is a non-resident in Florida temporarily for a period not to exceed 30 days.
It is unlawful to operate an ATV or UTV in a careless or reckless manner that endangers or causes injury or damage to another person or property.
Tropical Storm Elsa has strengthened to a category 1 hurricane but will lose power as it passes over Cuba and is still projected to be a tropical storm when it reaches Florida. I will post more updates as it gets closer to us or if there is a major change in its path. Please stay safe and enjoy the July 4th weekend.
Hello everyone. Please see the message below from Sentry and our Board.
SCHOOL BUSES AND WESTON HILLS COMMUNITY RESIDENT
As a courtesy to the residents of Weston Hills with children in the public schools, the Association has arranged for the school buses to come into the community to pick up and drop off the children who live in the community. We have had some issues recently and need the help of all the children who use the school buses and their parents.
Until recently, the pick-up and drop-off location has been in the parking lot at the clubhouse. Because of where the buses dropped off the children, many used the sidewalk running from the parking lot to the roadway and the island on Bay Vista. The island is a “round-about” and traffic goes around the island from several directions. Sometimes the children do not look out for vehicles and sometimes it is difficult for a driver to see the children crossing within the “round-about” area. There have been a couple of near misses and the Association is concerned about the safety of the children as well as the need to avoid accidents. The Association has addressed this issue with the Lake County School Board Transportation Department and with the recommendation of the Transportation Department the pick-up and drop-off areas have been changed so that traffic is stopped at the “round-about” and the children are prompted to go to the intersections when crossing the street.
Members of the Board and other concerned residents have been going to the drop off points when the buses are in the area to help direct the children to the correct crossing areas. Unfortunately, some parents have been parking in the roadway in the “round-about” area and some of the children have been less than cooperative in observing the traffic rules. If the pedestrian/traffic rules continue to be ignored by the children and/or vehicle drivers, the Transportation Department is prepared to relocate the pick-up and drop-off location to the intersection of Weston Hills Blvd. and US 27. This is NOT the result we want to see.
We need your help to keep our children safe. Please address this issue with any of your children who ride the buses and ask them to observe the traffic and pedestrian rules and directions given to them by the bus drivers or Association representatives. Parents, when picking up or dropping off your children, please pull into the clubhouse parking area and do not stop, stand or park in the roadway (Bay Vista Dr. or Weston Hills Blvd.) around the clubhouse. If you need to park, please park in the clubhouse parking lot ONLY.
Thank you for your help. Together we can keep all of our children safe!
We have had reports from an area school that drivers are not obeying school bus laws when children are being picked up or dropped off in our community. Please remember when the red loading lights are on and the stop arm is out it is illegal to pass the bus. Please obey this law and keep our children safe.
[Update 3/24/2014]: Here is PDF of State law about school buses including the penalties for passing one that is stopped.
