Hurricane Elsa Update #2

Hello residents,

Tropical Storm Elsa has strengthened to a category 1 hurricane but will lose power as it passes over Cuba and is still projected to be a tropical storm when it reaches Florida. I will post more updates as it gets closer to us or if there is a major change in its path. Please stay safe and enjoy the July 4th weekend.

You can find information on staying safe during a storm at our Hurricane Preparedness page.

July 4th Weekend & Fireworks

Hello residents,

If you are planning to shoot fireworks, please:

  • Shoot fireworks off in your driveway ONLY; do not do this on the sidewalk, the streets, or in the fields & retention areas
  • Please have adults supervision; children and teens must have an adult present
  • Please remove fireworks debris from your driveway and any that lands around your yard & street area when your are done
  • Please have a hose or a bucket of water handy to douse fireworks as needed

Security will be patrolling the streets to monitor activity. We urge residents to avoid shooting off their own fireworks and check out the many locations shooting off professional displays this year but if you do something at home, please be safe and be considerate of your neighbors.

Thank you and have a great holiday weekend.

School Bus Safety

Hello everyone. Please see the message below from Sentry and our Board.

DECEMBER 2014

SCHOOL BUSES AND WESTON HILLS COMMUNITY RESIDENT

As a courtesy to the residents of Weston Hills with children in the public schools, the Association has arranged for the school buses to come into the community to pick up and drop off the children who live in the community. We have had some issues recently and need the help of all the children who use the school buses and their parents.

Until recently, the pick-up and drop-off location has been in the parking lot at the clubhouse. Because of where the buses dropped off the children, many used the sidewalk running from the parking lot to the roadway and the island on Bay Vista. The island is a “round-about” and traffic goes around the island from several directions. Sometimes the children do not look out for vehicles and sometimes it is difficult for a driver to see the children crossing within the “round-about” area. There have been a couple of near misses and the Association is concerned about the safety of the children as well as the need to avoid accidents. The Association has addressed this issue with the Lake County School Board Transportation Department and with the recommendation of the Transportation Department the pick-up and drop-off areas have been changed so that traffic is stopped at the “round-about” and the children are prompted to go to the intersections when crossing the street.

Members of the Board and other concerned residents have been going to the drop off points when the buses are in the area to help direct the children to the correct crossing areas. Unfortunately, some parents have been parking in the roadway in the “round-about” area and some of the children have been less than cooperative in observing the traffic rules. If the pedestrian/traffic rules continue to be ignored by the children and/or vehicle drivers, the Transportation Department is prepared to relocate the pick-up and drop-off location to the intersection of Weston Hills Blvd. and US 27. This is NOT the result we want to see.

We need your help to keep our children safe.   Please address this issue with any of your children who ride the buses and ask them to observe the traffic and pedestrian rules and directions given to them by the bus drivers or Association representatives. Parents, when picking up or dropping off your children, please pull into the clubhouse parking area and do not stop, stand or park in the roadway (Bay Vista Dr. or Weston Hills Blvd.) around the clubhouse. If you need to park, please park in the clubhouse parking lot ONLY.

Thank you for your help. Together we can keep all of our children safe!

STOP for the school bus!

Cross streets only at intersections!

School Bus Safety

We have had reports from an area school that drivers are not obeying school bus laws when children are being picked up or dropped off in our community. Please remember when the red loading lights are on and the stop arm is out it is illegal to pass the bus. Please obey this law and keep our children safe.

Thank you.

[Update 3/24/2014]: Here is PDF of State law about school buses including the penalties for passing one that is stopped.
